Red, white, green, yellow, or blue, it doesn’t really matter.
Do you remember what your favorite color was?
How you immediately started aligning yourself with cartoon characters who wore it?
The emotional betrayal when your favorite character said something out of pocket?
Or worse, when the story turned on them?
You know the ones.
Your favorite Power Ranger.
Your chosen X-Man.
The specific turtle from TMNT.
The Powerpuff Girl who “got” you.
That one member of Voltron or GI Joe who felt like your reflection.
Sometimes it’s fun to look back on the little ways we began building our identities.
As kids, we didn’t have much say in anything.
Not dinner. Not bedtime. Not what we wore or where we went.
Maybe, maybe our friend group. But even that was sometimes a matter of who lived next door.
But we did get to choose our favorite color.
And for a while, that meant everything.
It was our first soft declaration of self.
A quiet claim to who we were, and maybe, who we were going to be.
Does any of it still hold true today?
